IDAHO BOARD OF SCALING PRACTICES

LOG SCALING WORKSHOP

APRIL 24, 2026

The Idaho Board of Scaling Practices will conduct a Log Scaling Workshop on April 24, 2026, in the St. Joe conference room at the Idaho Department of lands office located at 1806 Main Avenue, St. Maries, ID 83861

The workshop is open to individuals wishing to apply for certification as an Idaho licensed log scaler, in compliance with provisions of Idaho log scaling laws. The purpose of this workshop is to help new applicants familiarize themselves to the exam process and provide some additional training and instruction prior to taking the licensing exam on May 14-15, 2026.

The workshop begins at 8:00 am, Friday April 24th  with a PowerPoint presentation and classroom instruction on Idaho log scaling rules and procedures.  The afternoon will conclude with the trainees taking the written portion of the Idaho Log Scaler examination, followed by scaling 15-20 test logs at PotlatchDeltic. The test logs will be reviewed in the log yard following the individual scaling. Instruction for the scaling workshop will be based on current “Board” rules and the Idaho Log Scaling Manual.

All persons planning to attend this workshop should pre-register with the Board’s office.

Registration:  Bring your completed Application form and the $25 exam fee with you or mail it to our office prior to the workshop. Please contact us no later than Friday April 3rd, to allow ample time for processing.

A COMPLETED APPLICATION FORM AND $25 FEE ARE REQUIRED FOR the May 14th, 2026 Idaho log scaler licensing EXAM.

SCALING EQUIPMENT:  For the written exam you are allowed to use a Coconino Scribner decimal “C” scalestick, log volume card, and/or a simple calculator (no “scale recording devices”).  For the actual log scaling you will need to bring a hardhat, safety vest and provide the appropriate tools – scalestick, length tape, hand tape, hatchet or spud, calipers, etc.  You may also use the Idaho Log Scaling Manual, other reference material, calculator, etc. Scale data is determined and recorded on forms that we will provide at the testing site.
